A kingdom that controlled the area west of the Niger River in West Africa (present-day Western State of Nigeria) and at its peak extended as far as the Volta River. It is one of the kingdoms founded by the Yoruba people. According to legend, it was founded by King Oraniyan, the youngest son of Oduduwa, the founder of the Kingdom of Ife. The exact date of its founding is unclear, but it already existed around the 14th century, prospering as a key point for trade across the Sahara Desert and accumulating economic power. Later, when coastal trade flourished with the advance of Europeans, the kingdom hunted and exported slaves, acquiring guns and ammunition.
