Pyrophyllite (English spelling)
Also called pyrophyllite. Al 2 (Si 4 O 10 )(OH) 2 . Monoclinic mineral. Specific gravity 2.65-2.90, hardness 1-2. Pearlescent. Transparent. White, sometimes yellow, pale blue, grayish or brownish green. Perfect cleavage {001}. Found as leaf-shaped aggregates. Flexible but not elastic. It is the main component of pyrophyllite deposits formed by hydrothermal alteration of acidic igneous rocks, and occurs in association with quartz, muscovite, and other clay minerals, and also occurs as gangue in hydrothermal metal deposits. Used as a raw material for ceramics. Homogeneous pyrophyllite is used as a pressure medium for generating ultra-high pressure.

葉蝋石ともいう。 Al2(Si4O10)(OH)2 。単斜晶系の鉱物。比重 2.65~2.90,硬度1~2。真珠光沢。透明。白色ときに黄色,淡青色,帯灰または帯褐緑色など。劈開{001}に完全。葉片状集合塊として産する。撓曲性はあるが弾性に乏しい。酸性火成岩などが熱水変質作用を受けて生じたいわゆるろう石鉱床の主成分鉱物で,石英,白雲母その他の粘土鉱物などと共生して産し,熱水金属鉱床の脈石鉱物としても産する。窯業原料として利用される。均質なものは超高圧発生用の圧力媒質として使用される。
