Zhan Tiān yòu (English spelling)

Japanese: 詹天佑 - せんてんゆう（英語表記）Zhān Tiān yòu

1861‐1919
Chinese railway engineer. Born in Nanhai, Guangdong Province. His courtesy name was Juncheng. He was also known as Tien Yow Jeme. He was one of the first 30 students sent to the United States in 1872 (the 11th year of the Tongzhi era) during the Westernization Movement, and is famous for being almost the only person to have successfully studied civil engineering at Yale University. After returning to China, he was assigned to the Fujian Water Engineering College, but in 1988 (the 14th year of the Guangxu era), he transferred to the China Railway Corporation, where he constructed the Luan River Iron Bridge, and in 1905 he transferred to the Beijing-Zhangjiang Railway Bureau, where he succeeded in a succession of difficult construction projects, including a tunnel over 1,000 meters long, and invented construction methods such as switchbacks.

中国の鉄道技術者。広東省南海の人。字は眷誠。Tien Yow Jemeの名でも知られる。洋務運動のなかで1872年(同治11)に派遣された最初の留米学生30人の一人となり，イェール大学で土木工学を学んでほとんどただひとり成功した人物として有名である。帰国後，福建水師学堂に配置されたが，88年(光緒14)中国鉄路公司にうつり，灤河（らんが）鉄橋を建設，また1905年に京張鉄路局にうつっては，1000mを超すトンネルなどの難工事や，スイッチバック等の工法をつぎつぎと成功させた。
