Utility tunnel - Kyodoukou

Japanese:
Utility tunnel - Kyodoukou

A reinforced concrete underground structure that houses telephone cables, electric wires, gas pipes, and water and sewer pipes (including industrial water). A standard utility tunnel has enough space inside for people to enter and exit to inspect, expand, and repair the pipes and lines housed therein. The use of a road for purposes other than traffic is called occupation, and facilities for that purpose are called occupied structures. Utility poles, post boxes, and telephone booths are aboveground occupied structures, while water and sewer pipes, gas pipes, telephone cables, and electric wires are underground occupied structures. Underground occupied structures require the road surface to be dug up for new construction, expansion, and maintenance, and each time this is done, it becomes a major obstacle to today's increasing road traffic and is quite dangerous, so efforts are being made to house these underground occupied structures together in utility tunnels. In 1963, the "Special Measures Act on the Construction of Utility Tunnels" (Act No. 810 of 1963) was promulgated, and roads where utility tunnels should be installed were designated, and construction and installation are underway.
