North Korean writer. Born in South Hamgyong Province. After graduating from elementary school in 1929, he studied literature while working, and began his career as a writer after liberation. He also participated in partisan protests during the Korean War. He served as a deputy to the Supreme People's Assembly and chairman of the Korean Writers Union for many years, and received the Kim Il-sung Prize and the Lotus Prize. His works include the novels "The River Flows" (1962), "New Year in Seokgye" (Part 1, 1958, Part 2, 1963, Part 3, 1965), "Wish" (1980), and "Galaxy" (1982), which depict the changes in rural areas and the growth of farmers before and after liberation, as well as the medium-length story "Fighting Villagers" (1952) and the short story "Grandpa Tiger" (1949).
