Calcutta Botanical Gardens - A light botanical garden

[Botanical Gardens of the World]
Botanical gardens whose main purpose is research require vast areas of land and facilities such as greenhouses for cultivating living plants, as well as laboratories and auxiliary facilities such as libraries and herbariums (botanical research specimen collections), which entail huge expenses, and most of them are national or public, or are attached to national or public universities. During the British Empire, the UK established facilities at Kew Botanic Gardens in the west suburbs of London, Edinburgh Botanic Gardens in Scotland, Calcutta Botanic Gardens in India, Peradeniya Botanic Gardens in Sri Lanka, Singapore Botanic Gardens in Singapore, and Sydney Botanic Gardens in Australia, and formed collaborative research structures. The number of plants that can be cultivated in botanical gardens is limited in both species and numbers, so herbariums are essential for comparative research of plants that grow around the world, and all of these botanical gardens are equipped with herbariums that are among the world's largest in terms of the number of specimens they hold.
