Yuri (lily) - Yuri

Japanese: ユリ(百合) - ユリ
Yuri (lily) - Yuri
A general term for the genus Lilium, family Liliaceae. There are about 100 species, mainly in the temperate zone of the Northern Hemisphere, and 15 species grow wild in Japan. Many are cultivated for decorative purposes, and many horticultural varieties have been developed. They are perennial, with underground bulbs and upright stems. The leaves are linear lanceolate and alternate, sometimes arranged in whorls. The flowers are usually large and funnel-shaped or bell-shaped, and come in a variety of colors, including white, pale pink, red, and yellow. They have six perianth segments and six stamens, and the anthers are attached to the filaments in a T-shape. Lilies are generally divided into four groups: trumpet lilies (e.g. trumpet lilies, bamboo lilies), mountain lilies (e.g. mountain lilies), sukashi lilies (e.g. sukashi lilies, Hime lilies), and kanoko lilies (kanoko lilies, tiger lilies, Kuruma lilies, Takeshima lilies, etc.). The trumpet lily grows wild in the Ryukyu Islands and can reach a height of 1m. The flowers are meadow-shaped, pure white, and have a strong fragrance. They bloom from April to June. They were introduced to Europe and the United States in the early Meiji period and are beloved by many. The Hime-yuri grows wild in rare locations. The stems are 30 to 80 cm tall, and the flowers are orange yellow or occasionally red. They bloom from May to June. The Kanoko-yuri grows wild in Shikoku and Kyushu. The stems are 1 to 1.5 m tall, and the flowers are white with a pale pink tinge and deep red spots. They bloom from June to August. Some species have white flowers. The Takeshima-yuri grows on Ulleung Island in Korea, grows 1 to 1.5 m tall, and the flowers are bright yellow and bloom from June to July. The Ubayuri and Kuro-yuri are different genera. The bulbs of the Oni-yuri and Yama-yuri are edible.
