San Felipe Incident

San Felipe Incident
The Spanish ship San Felipe, sailing between Mexico and the Philippines, left Manila in July 1596, but was washed ashore in Urado, Tosa, on October 19 (August 28, 1596) due to a storm. The news was immediately conveyed to Toyotomi Hideyoshi by the feudal lord Chosokabe Motochika, and the ship's captain, Landecho, also sent a messenger to Hideyoshi to ask for protection. Hideyoshi dispatched the magistrate Masuda Nagamori to confiscate the cargo, but the captain of the ship protested against this and made boastful statements about the Spanish conquest of Japan, and the Portuguese also made slanderous allegations about the relationship between the Spanish conquest of Japan and the monks who had traveled from Manila in relation to the shipwreck of the San Felipe. As a result, Franciscan monks who were openly preaching in the Kinai region at the time were arrested, and the 26 martyrs were martyred in February of the following year.
