Fishing culture

Japanese: 漁労文化 - ぎょろうぶんか

A culture whose basic form is catching fish, shellfish, and algae that live near water. In essence, it corresponds in many ways to land-based gathering and hunting cultures, and some have described fishing culture itself as a primitive culture, but this is incorrect. Rather, it should be considered a culture that encompasses all human activities near water and in the aquatic world, including the fishing techniques of catching large amounts of fish and distributing them widely under a modern capitalist economy.

While humans are creatures that live on land, the objects of fishing are creatures that live in the water, so the fishing culture that arises at the point of contact between the two develops as a culture completely different from cultures on land.

水辺に生息する魚介類，藻類を採捕することを基本形とする文化。本質的な考え方としては陸上の採集狩猟文化に対応する部分が多いところから，漁労文化そのものを原始的な文化と評する論もあるが，これは正しくはない。むしろ，近代的な資本主義経済の下に，多獲して広く流通機構に乗せるという漁労技術も含めて，人間の水辺･水界における活動全般を包括する文化としてとらえるべきである。

　人間が陸上に生活する生物であるのに対して，漁労の対象となるものが水中に生息する生物であるために，その接点に生ずる漁労文化そのものは，陸上における諸文化とはまったく異質の文化として展開される。
