It is a marine animal belonging to the phylum Cnidaria, class Anthozoa, subclass Hexacorallia, order Actiniaria, family Actiniidae. It is widely distributed in the waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans, from central Honshu southward. Its body is cylindrical, with the largest ones reaching a height of 10 mm and a diameter of 5 mm. Its tentacles are extremely long, with 40 to 50 of each size, some of which can reach a length of 3 cm. Because the tentacles are large and numerous, they appear to be a mass of tentacles, and at first glance it is difficult to tell where the body is. The tentacles and diaphragms are arranged in a highly irregular manner due to asexual division. The inner ends of the diaphragm filaments have trifurcated ciliary bands. It has a foot disk but lacks foot disk muscles. It is brown due to symbiotic algae, and the tentacles and oral disk are also brown and translucent. It has a circular muscle surrounding the base of each tentacle, which it rapidly contracts when stimulated, causing the tentacles to autotomize. They sprout from the base of the tentacle ring, or the tentacles break off and regenerate into a single sea anemone. They live in areas of inland bays where seaweed grows thickly, and attach themselves to seaweed, but sometimes they swim by waving their tentacles.

刺胞(しほう)動物門花虫(はなむし)綱六放サンゴ亜綱イソギンチャク目オヨギイソギンチャク科に属する海産動物。本州中部以南、西太平洋およびインド洋海域に広く分布する。体は円筒形で、大きいものでは高さ10ミリメートル、径5ミリメートルになる。触手は甚だ長大で、大小あわせて40～50本を備え、大きいものでは長さ3センチメートルにもなる。触手が大きく数も多いため、触手の塊のようにみえ、一見、体がどこにあるのかわからないことが多い。触手および隔膜は無性分裂のため著しく不規則に配列する。隔膜糸の内端は三叉(さんさ)状の繊毛帯を有する。足盤はあるが足盤筋を欠く。共生藻のため褐色で、触手および口盤も褐色で半透明である。各触手の基部を取り巻くように環状筋をもち、刺激を受けるとこれを急に縮めることによって、触手を自切する。触手環の基部より出芽したり、触手がちぎれて一個体のイソギンチャクに再生したりする。内湾のアジモの繁茂する所などに生息し、海藻上に付着しているが、ときとして触手を打ち振って泳ぐことがある。
