A Silla-era ruin in Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, southern Korea. It is believed to have been built in the 7th century and is said to be the oldest astronomical observatory in the East. It is a stone tower made of 361.5 pieces of granite, each about 30cm high (the number of days in a lunar year), and each side points neatly to the north, south, east and west. It is said that the length of sunlight coming in through the windows was used to distinguish between the four seasons, record constellations and lunar eclipses, and make decisions on important national matters. ◇It can also be read as "Cheomseongdae."
