A period in Japanese archaeology that precedes the Jomon period. It is also known by other names such as the Pre-Pottery Period and the Non-Pottery Period. However, today more people refer to it as the Paleolithic Period. One of the reasons for avoiding the term Paleolithic and using the above name is that, while Paleolithic culture refers to human culture that belongs to the Pleistocene Epoch, it is not known whether all of the stone tools currently considered Paleolithic in Japan belong to the Pleistocene Epoch.
