Pre-Jomon period

Japanese: 先縄文時代 - せんじょうもんじだい

A period in Japanese archaeology that precedes the Jomon period. It is also known by other names such as the Pre-Pottery Period and the Non-Pottery Period. However, today more people refer to it as the Paleolithic Period. One of the reasons for avoiding the term Paleolithic and using the above name is that, while Paleolithic culture refers to human culture that belongs to the Pleistocene Epoch, it is not known whether all of the stone tools currently considered Paleolithic in Japan belong to the Pleistocene Epoch. 日本考古学の時代名称で，縄文時代に先行する時代をいう。先土器時代，無土器時代などの別称もある。しかし現在では，旧石器時代とよぶ人の方が多い。旧石器時代の語を避けて上記の名を使う根拠の一つは，旧石器文化が洪積世に属する人類文化を意味するのに対して，いま日本で旧石器として扱っている石器のすべてが洪積世に属するかどうかわからないという認識による。旧石器時代【佐原眞】
