A Confucian term referring to the form of succession of dynasties in China. The peaceful transfer of power to a virtuous person believed to have received the mandate of heaven was abdication, while the seizing of power by force was called fōbō. The succession of Yao, Shun, and Yu is called abdication, while the succession of Xia, Yin, and Zhou is called fōbō. When the power of the aristocracy grew strong during the time of Wang Mang, the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties, the Confucian theory of the change of surname led to the transfer of power being carried out in the form of abdication on the surface, regardless of the actual circumstances. →Related topicsSong Dynasty|Emperor Wu (Song Dynasty) Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
