The "Society for the Study of Poetic Language" was founded in Petrograd, Russia around 1916. It was a group that played a part in the Russian Formalist critical movement based on poetics and linguistics. Its members included VB Shklovsky, BM Eichenbaum, Yu. N. Tynyanov, LP Yakubinskii (1892-1945), and ED Polivanov (1891-1938). While associated with the Futurist art movement, it rejected conventional criticism that reduced literary works to non-literary elements, asserted the autonomy of literature, and aspired to establish a "science of literature." It analyzed the thematic structure, style, and structure of literary works, and attempted to criticize them from the perspective of methods of linguistic expression.

1916年ごろロシアのペトログラードで成立した〈詩的言語研究会〉のことで，詩学と言語学を根底に置くロシア･フォルマリズムの批評運動の一翼を担ったグループ。V.B.シクロフスキー，B.M.エイヘンバウム，Yu.N.トゥイニャーノフ，ヤクビンスキーL.P.Yakubinskii(1892‐1945)，ポリワーノフE.D.Polivanov(1891‐1938)らが参加。未来派の芸術運動と関連をもちつつ，文学作品を文学以外の要素に還元する素材としていた従来の批評を拒否して文学の自律性を主張し，〈文学の科学〉の確立を志向し，文学作品の主題構成や文体や構造を分析し，言語表現の方法の面から批評を行おうとした。
