Reineckia carnea (English name)

Japanese: キチジョウソウ(吉祥草) - キチジョウソウ（英語表記）Reineckia carnea

An evergreen perennial plant of the lily family. It is found from the Kanto region westward to Kyushu and Chugoku. It grows naturally in the shade under trees, but is also often cultivated in gardens. The stem crawls along the ground, producing fibrous roots at various nodes, and leaves 30 cm long and 1-2 cm wide grow in clusters from the base. In late autumn, short flower spikes protrude from between the leaves, producing small pale purple flowers with small bracts and pedicels in clusters. The flowers have six tepals that fuse together to form a tube. The fruit is a round berry that turns reddish purple and overwinters on the flower stalk.
