Silicon carbide (silicon carbide)

Japanese: 炭化ケイ素(炭化珪素) - たんかけいそ（英語表記）silicon carbide

The chemical formula is SiC. Pure silicon carbide is a colorless, transparent hexagonal plate-shaped crystal, but it is usually green or black-purple in color. It has a specific gravity of 3.21. It has high hardness (Knoop hardness is about 2500) and is used as an abrasive. It is an artificial abrasive that first appeared in 1891, invented by the American EG Acheson and commercialized by the American Carborundum Company. The company's product name is Carborundum. It is produced by heating a mixture of silica sand _SiO2 and coke C in an electric resistance furnace and reacting them at high temperatures (2000°C).

化学式SiC。純粋なものは無色透明の六角板状結晶であるが，ふつうは緑色ないし黒紫色を呈する。比重3.21。硬度が高く(ヌープ硬さは約2500)，研磨材に使われる。1891年に初めて出現した人造研磨材で，アメリカのE.G.アチソンが発明し，アメリカのカーボランダム社で商品化されたものである。同社の商品名をカーボランダムCarborundumという。ケイ砂SiO₂とコークスCとの混合物を電気抵抗炉で加熱し，高温(2000℃)で反応させて製造する。
