The chemical formula is SiC. Pure silicon carbide is a colorless, transparent hexagonal plate-shaped crystal, but it is usually green or black-purple in color. It has a specific gravity of 3.21. It has high hardness (Knoop hardness is about 2500) and is used as an abrasive. It is an artificial abrasive that first appeared in 1891, invented by the American EG Acheson and commercialized by the American Carborundum Company. The company's product name is Carborundum. It is produced by heating a mixture of silica sand SiO2 and coke C in an electric resistance furnace and reacting them at high temperatures (2000°C).
