Kenaf - Kenaf (English spelling)

An annual plant of the Malvaceae family (APG classification: Malvaceae). Also called blue-green malvaceae. The stems are erect, 3-4 meters tall, and sometimes reddish. The leaves are palmately deep with 3-5 lobes and pointed tips. In summer, 2-3 flowers appear in each leaf axil. The flowers are beautiful, whitish-yellow with 5 petals and about 10 cm in diameter, with a dark red center. It is thought to be native to Africa or India, and is cultivated in tropical and temperate regions to obtain fiber from the stems. It is harvested 4-5 months after sowing. The fiber is similar to jute, and is used to make hemp bags, nets, ropes, etc., and is also used as a raw material for papermaking. The seeds contain about 20% oil, which is pressed to be used for food, lighting, and soap. The pomace is used as livestock feed.
