Wire rods

A wire-shaped metal material that is wound into a coil and shipped. In the case of steel wire, it is classified into soft steel wire, hard steel wire, piano wire, welding rod core wire, stainless steel wire, etc., depending on the material. It is finished from a billet to a diameter of 5 to 20 mm in a hot rolling machine, but if it is made thinner, it is passed through a die tool at room temperature and drawn out. For soft steel wire, the hot-rolled material is drawn out directly with a wire drawing machine, but for hard steel wire, it is heated again to around 900°C and then quenched to around 550°C to form a structure called pearlite, in which iron carbide Fe ₃ C (called cementite) is arranged in extremely fine layers (this process is called patenting), and then drawn out. Wire rods are used as they are for steel bars and springs, as well as for bolts and nails. Hard steel wire containing 0.65 to 0.95% carbon is also called piano wire.

コイルに巻かれて出荷される線状の金属材料。鋼線の場合はその材質から軟鋼線、硬鋼線、ピアノ線、溶接棒心線、ステンレス線などに分類される。直径5～20ミリメートルまで熱間圧延機で鋼片から一気に仕上げられるが、さらに細くする場合は室温でダイス工具に通して引き抜く。軟鋼線は熱間圧延された素材をそのまま伸線機で引き抜かれるが、硬鋼線の場合はふたたび900℃付近に加熱されたのち550℃付近まで急冷されて炭化鉄Fe₃C（セメンタイトという）がきわめて微細に層状に配列するパーライトとよばれる組織にしてから（この処理をパテンティングという）引き抜かれる。線材はそのまま金鋼やばねとして用いられるほか、ボルトや釘(くぎ)などの素材となる。0.65～0.95％の炭素を含む硬鋼線はピアノ線ともよばれる。
