Brest (English spelling)
Formerly known as Brest-Litovsk, it is the capital of Brest Oblast in southwestern Belarus. It is a river port city on the Mukhabets River, which flows into the Bug River, about 330 km southwest of the capital Minsk, and is close to the border with Poland. It was recorded in 1019 and was part of Lithuania from the beginning of the 13th century, then Poland for a long time, and in 1795 it became part of Russia. Because it was a strategic transportation location, it was destroyed in every war. During World War I, it was the site of a separate peace treaty between the Soviet Union and Germany in 1917-18 (→ Treaty of Brest-Litovsk). It is also known as the place where the Soviet garrison was surrounded by German troops and annihilated in 1941 during World War II. Industries such as food, textiles, furniture, and machinery are located here. There is a pedagogical university and the Brest Fortress Museum. There is a railway line connecting Moscow and Warsaw, and there is also an airport. Population: 277,000 (1991 estimate).

A port city in the Finistère department on the Brittany Peninsula in western France. A port since Gallo-Roman times, it is the birthplace of the Duchy of Brittany. A military port with a tradition dating back to the 17th century, it has a naval arsenal, dock facilities, a submarine base, and a thermal power plant. During World War I it served as a connecting port with the United States, and during World War II it was occupied by Germany and suffered heavy damage during the war. It is also a thriving commercial port, importing steel, coal, oil, and timber, and exporting fruit, vegetables, and cattle. In addition to private repair docks, it has industries in the electronics, precision equipment, and chemical industries. At the western end of the town stands a castle with a keep and seven towers, dating back to the 3rd century. It is also the location of the Naval Academy. Population: 142,097 (2008).
