1853‐1936 A German art historian and one of the pioneers of art studies, he served as professor of art history at the University of Leipzig from 1893 to 1919. As an art historian, he studied Italian Renaissance art, and as an art scholar, he believed that what regulates artistic activity is the structure of the human body, which creatively interacts with the outside world. He derived the main formal principles of creativity, such as proportion, symmetry, and rhythm, from the height, width, and depth of the body, and his wide-ranging insights have had a great influence on architectural spatial theory and other fields. His major works include Fundamental Concepts of Art Studies (1905). Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
