Terumasa Ikeda
Year of death: January 25, 1613 (March 16, 1613)
Year of birth: December 29, 1565 (January 31, 1565)
A feudal lord in the Azuchi-Momoyama period. His childhood name was Koshin. He was commonly known as Sanzaemon-no-jo. His given name was also Terumasa. He was the son of the daughter of Ikeda Tsuneoki and Arao Zenji. He was born in Kiyosu, Owari Province (Kiyosu Town, Aichi Prefecture). In 1580, he accompanied his father to the siege of Araki Murashige's subordinate castle, Hanakuma Castle (Kobe City). In 1581, during the Battle of Komaki and Nagakute, he lost his father Tsuneoki and his older brother Motosuke, who had sided with Hashiba (Toyotomi) Hideyoshi, at Nagakute. With his father and brother killed in battle, he inherited the family headship and became lord of Ogaki Castle. The following year, Hideyoshi bestowed Gifu Castle in Mino with a fief of 100,000 koku. In 1582, after taking part in the Kyushu campaign, he was given the surname Hashiba. 1583, when Emperor Yozei visited Hideyoshi's Jurakutei, he accompanied him on horseback. At this time, he was given the surname Toyotomi and became a chamberlain of the fourth rank. In the same year, he participated in the Siege of Odawara and the Oshu Conquest, and after his triumphant return, he was transferred to Yoshida in Mikawa (Toyohashi City) with a fief of 152,000 koku. In Bunroku 3 (1594), Hideyoshi ordered him to take Tokugawa Ieyasu's daughter, Tokuhime (Ryoshoin), as his successor. This earned him favorable treatment from Ieyasu, and became the background for building the foundation for the prosperity of the Ikeda clan. His lawful wife was Nakagawa Kiyohide's daughter, Daigiin. In the Battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 5 (1600), he belonged to the eastern army and captured Gifu Castle, where Oda Hidenobu was holed up. He led the vanguard in the decisive battle. After the war, he was awarded 520,000 koku in Harima Himeji for his achievements. At the same time, his younger brother Nagayoshi was given 60,000 koku in Inaba Tottori. After entering Himeji Castle, he began large-scale reconstruction of the castle grounds. In the same year, when Ieyasu visited the Imperial Palace to assume the position of Shogun, he was promoted to Shosho and accompanied Ieyasu in his palanquin. In the 14th year, large ships were banned from entering the western provinces, but Terumasa was allowed to enter only. This was an example of preferential treatment given to Terumasa. In the 17th year, he was appointed to the rank of Shoshi no Ge and given the surname Matsudaira. They were known in the world as Himeji Chancellor with a stipend of one million koku and Shogun of the Western Provinces. Terumasa was given 520,000 koku, his younger brother Nagayoshi was given 60,000 koku, his second son Tadatsugu was given 280,000 koku in Bizen in 1605, and his third son Tadao was given 60,000 koku in Awaji in 1612, giving the family a total estate of 920,000 koku. <References> Hashimoto Masatsugu, History of Himeji Castle (reprinted, 1973)
