French politician and revolutionary leader. Born into a marquis family in the Auvergne region. He inherited a large fortune and became a soldier, but in 1777 he traveled to America alone and participated in the War of Independence as a volunteer. After returning to the United States, he was elected as a member of the nobility to the Assembly of Notables in 1787 and to the Three Estates General in 1789. La Fayette, a liberal aristocrat who was already popular as a "hero of the New World," gained even more fame through this election, and he was appointed commander of the Paris National Guard immediately after the Bastille Massacre in July of the same year, becoming a "hero of both continents."

フランスの政治家，大革命の指導者。オーベルニュ地方の侯爵家に生まれる。多額の遺産を相続し，軍人となるが，1777年単身アメリカに渡り，義勇兵として独立戦争に参加した。帰国後，87年に名士会，89年には全国三部会に貴族身分の議員として選出された。すでに〈新大陸の英雄〉として人気を博していた自由主義貴族ラ･ファイエットの名声はこれによりいっそう高まり，同年7月のバスティーユ事件の直後パリ国民軍司令官に指名され，〈両大陸の英雄〉となった。
