1757‐1834 French politician and revolutionary leader. Born into a marquis family in the Auvergne region. He inherited a large fortune and became a soldier, but in 1777 he traveled to America alone and participated in the War of Independence as a volunteer. After returning to the United States, he was elected as a member of the nobility to the Assembly of Notables in 1787 and to the Three Estates General in 1789. La Fayette, a liberal aristocrat who was already popular as a "hero of the New World," gained even more fame through this election, and he was appointed commander of the Paris National Guard immediately after the Bastille Massacre in July of the same year, becoming a "hero of both continents."
