Ten Types of New and Old Drama - Shinko Engeki Jisshu

The Onoe Kikugoro family has ten kabuki plays that are their family art. Kikugoro V planned this in opposition to the Ichikawa Danjūrō ​​family's "Kabuki Juhachiban" and "Shin Kabuki Juhachiban." Kikugoro V first named them when he re-staged "Tsuchigumo" in 1887 (Meiji 20). He subsequently selected nine plays, including "Ibaraki," "Hitotsuya," "Modoribashi," "Kikujidō," "Rakan," "Furudera no Neko," "Osakabehime," and "Hagoromo," and later Kikugoro VI added his own play "Migawari Zazen" in 1912, bringing the total to ten. Most of the plays are of the form of monster transformations, a tradition of the Onoe family since the time of the first Matsusuke and the third Kikugorou. Also, reflecting the refined tastes of the Meiji period, the play is notable for the large number of plays based on Noh and Kyogen, or imitating their forms.

尾上菊五郎(おのえきくごろう)家が家の芸とする10種の歌舞伎(かぶき)劇。5世菊五郎が市川団十郎家の「歌舞伎十八番」「新歌舞伎十八番」に対抗して企図したもので、1887年（明治20）の『土蜘(つちぐも)』再演のときに初めて名づけ、以後『茨木(いばらき)』『一つ家(や)』『戻橋(もどりばし)』『菊慈童(きくじどう)』『羅漢(らかん)』『古寺(ふるでら)の猫(ねこ)』『刑部姫(おさかべひめ)』『羽衣(はごろも)』の9種まで選び、のち6世菊五郎が1912年、自身創演の『身替座禅(みがわりざぜん)』を再演したときにこれを加えて10種とした。ほとんどが初世松助・3世菊五郎以来尾上家の芸とされた妖怪変化(ようかいへんげ)の役であり、また明治の高尚趣味を反映して能・狂言に取材した作品や、その形式を模した演目の多いことが特色。
