…A trademark given to publications by the German publishing house Bibliographisches Institut (which merged with FA Brockhaus in 1984 and was renamed Bibliographisches Institut & FA Brockhaus), originally founded in Gotha in 1826 by Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), specializing in encyclopedias and dictionaries. There are many works bearing the Duden name, including encyclopedias and a recent six-volume German dictionary, but the most famous of these is the Duden Orthographical Dictionary (1915), a revised edition of Konrad Duden's (1829-1911) German Orthographical Dictionary (1880). …

…One of Germany's leading encyclopedias. Joseph Meyer (1796-1856), a publisher in Gotha, founded the Bibliographisches Institut in 1826, and moved to Hildburghausen two years later. He published Das grosse Konversations‐Lexikon (46 volumes) between 1840 and 1852, followed by six supplementary volumes (1853-1855). This established the foundations for encyclopedia publishing, and he published a new 15-volume encyclopedia under the title Neue Konversationale Dictionary (New Conversational Dictionary) between 1857 and 1860. …
