Hyozo Omori

A Meiji-era physical education professional. First physical education director at the Tokyo YMCA. Introduced basketball. Born in Okayama Prefecture. Traveled to the United States in 1901 and studied economics at Stanford University, but transferred to the International YMCA Training School in Springfield to study physical education. Married an American woman and returned to Japan in 1906. In 1901, he founded the Japan Amateur Athletic Association with Kano Jigoro and others. The following year, he participated as a team coach in the 5th Olympic Games in Stockholm, Japan's first Olympic Games. 明治時代の体育家。東京YMCA初代体育主事。バスケットボールの紹介者。岡山県生まれ。明治34(1901)年渡米,スタンフォード大学で経済学を学ぶが,スプリングフィールドの国際YMCAトレーニング・スクールに転学,体育学を学んだ。米国女性と結婚,41年帰国。44年,嘉納治五郎らと共に大日本体育協会を創設。翌年,日本初参加の第5回オリンピック・ストックホルム大会に選手団監督として参加。帰途,米国で肺結核が悪化,カリフォルニア州パサディナで死去。<著作>『オリンピック式陸上運動競技法』<参考文献>水谷豊『白夜のオリンピック―幻の大森兵蔵をもとめて―』
