However, within the army, there were strong critics who insisted on maintaining the superiority of the Macedonians and Greeks as conquerors and enslaving the Easterners as conquered, and who criticized his policy as an Orientalist despotic king. The feud between these two factions eventually surfaced in the successive purges of those critical of the king, including his lieutenant general Parmenion and his son Philotas, his close friend Kleitos, and the philosopher and historian Callisthenes. The two plots to assassinate the king were also the product of the same situation. …
