A perennial plant of the Asteraceae family (APG classification: Asteraceae). Also called Iwanigana. It overwinters in rosettes and reproduces in spring by extending long, thin runners above ground level. Its name comes from the way that roots develop at each node of the runners. The leaves are oval and thin, and when cut, they exude a milky liquid. From April to June, short flower stalks bear yellow flower heads measuring about 2 cm in diameter. The florets consist of only ray flowers. It commonly grows on roadsides and farmland, and is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean peninsula, Taiwan, and China. The closely related I. japonica (Burm.f.) Nakai ( I. debilis A.Gray) often grows on ridges. The leaves are oval with a notch at the bottom, and the flower heads are rather large.
