It is said to have been established around 1873 in Badminton, on the estate of the Duke of Beaufort in Gloucestershire, England, and the Badminton Association was formed in 1893. It is an evolution of the shuttlecock game that existed before the 16th century, and was brought to India by soldiers. The first rules were established in the mid-1870s in the Pune region near Bombay, so some say it originated in Pune. In the early days, it was loved by wealthy aristocrats and upper class people who had large mansions and large halls, and it has become a sport in which the spirit of fair play is respected. …

　1873年ごろ，イギリスのグロスターシャーのボーフォート公爵の所領バドミントンで確立したといわれ，93年にバドミントン協会が結成された。16世紀以前からあった羽根つきbattledore and shuttlecockの発展したもので，軍人によってインドに伝えられ，ボンベイに近いプネー地方で1870年代中ごろ最初の規則がつくられたため，プネーを起源とする説もある。草創期は大きな館や大広間のある裕福な貴族や上流階級の人々に愛好され，フェアプレー精神が尊重されるスポーツとなっている。…
