Imperfect lichen (illustration) that grows on the ground in high mountains above the dwarf pine zone. It is widely distributed in the alpine zones of both the northern and southern hemispheres. The lichen bodies are white, tubular, and slightly bent into a roundworm shape, with pointed tips and no roots. The symbiotic algae are green algae. No odontae have yet been discovered. It is distinguished from the closely related T. subuliformis (Ehrh.) W.Culb. mainly by differences in the components it contains, but T. subuliformis is more prevalent in the northern hemisphere and T. subuliformis in the southern hemisphere.
