Sjöberg, Birger
Born: 6 December 1885 in Vanersborg
[Died] April 30, 1929. Swedish poet from Växjö. With almost no formal education, he worked in various jobs before becoming a journalist. At the age of 39, he burst onto the literary scene like a comet, and died after only five years of creative activity. His ambitious collection of poems, Kriser och Kransar (Crisis and Crown) (1926), is highly praised for its fierce confrontation with life and its unique form, and is recognized as one of the masterpieces of modern Swedish poetry. He was prone to schizophrenia and sometimes suffered from extreme depression, and many of his poems reflect his inner troubles, searching for a world of light in the darkness. His first collection of poems was Frida's Book (22), and he even went on a minstrel tour singing the poems from this collection. Other works include the novel Shattered Quartet (24), the posthumously published poetry collection The Book of Frida, Volume 2 (29), and Memories of Earth (40).

He contributed to the revival of Swedish film after World War II with such excellent works as Hets (44) and Fröken Julie (51). The latter in particular made use of a technique in which past events appear within a present scene, and its originality drew attention, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 1951. After 1969, he retired from the film world and became active as a stage director.
