The body has the ability to process fibrin that precipitates as a result of blood coagulation. One way is by processing it by phagocytes and granulocytes, and the other is by decomposition by the proteolytic enzyme plasmin, which is produced by activating plasminogen in plasma. The latter is called fibrinolysis, and is thought to be the main process in the body. When fibrin precipitates, plasminogen and plasminogen activating enzyme that has been released from the blood vessel wall and is circulating in the blood are adsorbed to the fibrin, and both are concentrated on the fibrin molecule, where efficient plasminogen activation occurs.

生体には，生体内で血液凝固の結果析出した繊(線)維素(フィブリン)を処理する能力がある。一つは，食細胞や顆粒球による処理であり，他は血漿中のプラスミノーゲンの活性化によって生ずるタンパク質分解酵素プラスミンによる分解である。後者が繊維素溶解といわれるもので，生体内ではこちらが主と考えられている。繊維素が析出すると，プラスミノーゲンと，血管壁から遊離して循環血中を流れているプラスミノーゲン活性化酵素が繊維素に吸着され，繊維素分子上に両者が濃縮され，そこで効率的なプラスミノーゲンの活性化が起こる。
