[Born] Tensho 11 (1583) [Died] January 16, 1638. Kyoto. A Yamato painter of the early Edo period. Commonly known as Genzaemon. His pen names are said to be Munehito, Munekin, and Muneon. He was the son (or disciple) of Tosa Mitsuyoshi, and like Mitsuyoshi, is thought to have lived in Sakai and had connections with the Kano school. He participated in the production of the Taima Mandala Engi Emaki (1616) owned by the Noshi family. In Kan'ei 11 (34), he moved to Kyoto with his son Mitsuoki and hoped to become a court painter, which was granted during Mitsuoki's reign. He produced the Genji Kaiga-cho (Collection of Paintings of Genji) (Tokugawa Art Museum), Ete-kagami (Tokyo National Museum), and Hakubyo Genji Monogatari Ga-cho (Collection of Paintings of the Tale of Genji) (Freer Gallery of Art) with meticulous depictions.
