...From the 12th century onwards, society began to accept university-trained (scholarly) lawyers, assigning them an important social role and a fairly high status in the class-based social order. Thus, by the 15th century, the scholarly lawyer had become, to a greater or lesser extent, an essential component of legal life in all European countries. The process of adoption and its results can be more easily understood by looking at it from the perspective of the social acceptance of the scholarly lawyer.
