…In 1898, Curie and his wife discovered that the air around radium compounds was radioactive, and in 1900, F. Dorn proved that this was due to a gas generated from radium. Furthermore, E. Rutherford et al., F. Soddy, and W. Ramsay in England confirmed that this gas was an inert gas and belonged to group 0 of the periodic table, and called it radium emanation. Ramsay and R.W. Gray also showed that it was the heaviest gas known up to that point by measuring its specific gravity, and proposed to call it niton, after the Latin nitere (to shine), because it emits phosphorescence when liquefied in a glass tube, but at an international conference in 1923, the name radon was adopted because it was produced by decomposition from radium. …
