A painting term. An engraved intaglio technique for copperplate printing. It is one of the oldest techniques in copperplate printing. Lines are engraved directly onto the plate using a special engraving knife called a burin, and the engraved recesses are filled with ink and printed using an etching press. Unlike drypoint, which is also a direct method, this method's greatest feature is its ability to produce intricate line drawings, and it was often used as a technique for reproducing masterpieces in the days before photography. For practical intaglio printing of banknotes, stamps, etc., steel engraving is done using steel plates.

絵画用語。銅版画の彫刻凹版技法。銅版画技法のなかで最も歴史の古い一技法。直接版面に専用の彫刻刀ビュランを使って線刻し，線刻された凹部にインキを詰めてエッチング・プレスで刷る。この方法は同じ直接法のドライポイントと異なり，細密な線描表現が可能な点が最大の特色で，写真がない時代の名画の複製技法としてもしばしば用いられた。また紙幣，切手などの実用凹版印刷では，鋼板を使ったスチール・エングレービングが行われている。
