[Canal History]

[Types and roles]
Canals have long been used only for small boats traveling on inland waterways, but with the advancement of civil engineering technology and the increase in transportation demand, large canals for ocean-going ships began to appear in the second half of the 19th century. In Europe and the United States, the former are distinguished as "barge canals" and the latter as "ship canals." In terms of their relationship to natural waterways, there are lateral canals built on the side of rivers to avoid the rapids of the river, canals that connect two natural waterways across a watershed, and canals that connect inland river ports with the ocean.
