German conductor and violinist of Hungarian origin. His father was from Moravia. He studied under the famous violinist J. Hermesberger (1828-1893) (son of Joachim's teacher G. Hermesberger) at the Vienna Conservatory, and after working as a violinist, he became the conductor of the Leipzig City Opera in 1878. He served as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1889 to 1893, and after working at the Royal Opera House in Budapest, he served as the principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1895. He was a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1902 to 1907.
