German conductor and violinist of Hungarian origin. His father was from Moravia. He studied under the famous violinist J. Hermesberger (1828-1893) (son of Joachim's teacher G. Hermesberger) at the Vienna Conservatory, and after working as a violinist, he became the conductor of the Leipzig City Opera in 1878. He served as the principal conductor of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1889 to 1893, and after working at the Royal Opera House in Budapest, he served as the principal conductor of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1895. He was a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory from 1902 to 1907. His main repertoire consisted of German music from Beethoven to the late Romantic period, as well as Tchaikovsky, and his dramatic and well-structured conducting can be heard in his 1914 recording of Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 with the Berlin Philharmonic. → Bruckner/Furtwängler → Related topics Kreisler | Heifetz | Backhaus | Reiner

ハンガリー出身のドイツの指揮者，バイオリン奏者。父はモラビアの出身。ウィーン音楽院で名バイオリン奏者J.ヘルメスベルガー〔1828-1893〕（ヨアヒムの師G.ヘルメスベルガーの息子）らに学び，バイオリン奏者として活動後1878年ライプチヒ市立歌劇場の指揮者となる。以後1889年―1893年ボストン交響楽団の常任指揮者を務め，ブダペストの王立歌劇場を経て1895年からライプチヒ・ゲバントハウス管弦楽団とベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団の常任指揮者を兼任。1902年―1907年ライプチヒ音楽院教授。ベートーベンから後期ロマン派に至るドイツ音楽のほかチャイコフスキーを主なレパートリーとし，その劇的で構成力に優れた指揮ぶりは1914年のベルリン・フィルとのレコード録音，ベートーベン《交響曲第５番》などに聴くことができる。→ブルックナー／フルトウェングラー
