4-pyridinecarboxylic acid hydrazide. C 6 H 7 N 3 O(137.14). Abbreviated as INAH. Also known as isoniazid. It is obtained from isonicotinic acid or its ester and hydrazine. Colorless or white crystals. Melting point 170-173 °C. Slightly bitter. Easily soluble in water, 10% soluble in boiling ethanol. Insoluble in other organic solvents. Changes with light. Aqueous solution is relatively stable. It is used as an antituberculous drug, and its growth inhibitory effect on tuberculosis bacteria is stronger than that of streptomycin and para-aminosalicylic acid. Side effects include tremors in the hands and feet, insomnia, dry mouth, dizziness, and constipation. LD 50 150 mg/kg (mouse, intravenous injection).
