A city in the northern part of Osaka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1939. The northern part is hilly, while the southern part is part of the Osaka Plain. Its ancient name was Kureha no Sato, and it is said to be a place where immigrants passed down weaving techniques. The city center on the left bank of the Ina River, which flows south along the border with Hyogo Prefecture, flourished in the early modern period as a trading market for charcoal (Ikeda charcoal) and fruit, and during the Genroku period it was a sake brewing area on a par with the Nada Gogo. The city is served by the Hankyu Takarazuka Line, and is a satellite city of Osaka City. In the southern part near Osaka International Airport, there are factories that manufacture small cars and optical lenses. In the rural areas, tree and seedling cultivation is thriving. 大阪府北部の市。1939年市制。北部は丘陵地,南部は大阪平野の一部で,古名を呉羽里(くれはのさと)といい,渡来人による織布技術伝承の地とされる。兵庫県境を南流する猪名(いな)川左岸の中心市街は近世に炭(池田炭),果実の取引市で栄え,元禄年間には灘五郷と並ぶ酒造地でもあった。阪急宝塚線が通じ,大阪市の衛星都市となり,大阪国際空港に近い南部には小型自動車,光学レンズの工場が立地。農村部では植木・苗木栽培が盛ん。中国自動車道,阪神高速道路が通じる。22.14km2。10万4229人(2010)。
