1105‐76 Arab historian. Born into the prestigious Asakir family of Damascus, he studied under Shafi'i scholars and then travelled to Baghdad to study at the Nizamiya School. He returned to Damascus once, and from 1134 travelled again to the eastern countries to collect a vast amount of traditions (hadith). After returning to Damascus in 1141, he worked to spread the doctrine of Sunni Islam under the patronage of Nur al-Din.
