Japanese: 生簀 - いけす

A device in which fish are kept in a pond that divides part of the water's surface with nets, bamboo, or baskets. A typical example is a pond for keeping sardines to be used as live bait for skipjack tuna fishing. Sardines caught with a purse seine net are transferred directly to a pond made of a wooden frame made of timber assembled together at sea and stretched over a net, then towed to a base where they are kept until a skipjack tuna boat comes to buy them. Sardines that have been kept in a pond for more than a week are called "pond-tsuke sardines." Boats also have ponds (live fish storage), and they are transported alive to the fishing grounds. In the past, water exchange holes were drilled in the bottom of the boat and natural water exchange was relied upon.

水面の一部を網，タケ，籠などで仕切り，その中で魚を飼っておく装置。代表的なものに，カツオ釣りの生餌として使うイワシを飼っておくいけすがある。巻網でとったイワシは，海上で角材を組んで作った木枠に網をはって作ったいけすに直接移され，基地へ曳航され，カツオ船が買いにくるまで蓄養される。いけすで1週間以上ならしたイワシを〈いけつけイワシ〉と呼ぶ。船にもいけす(活魚倉)があり，漁場まで生かして運ぶ。昔は船底に換水孔を開けて，自然換水に頼っていた。
