Yamada Saburo

Born: November 18, 1869, Nara
[Died] December 17, 1965. Tokyo scholar of private international law. Graduated from the Tokyo Imperial University Law School in 1895. Studied private international law at the Graduate School of the same university. From 1897 to 1901, he studied in Germany, France, England, and the United States. He became an associate professor in 1900, a professor in 1901, and a doctorate in law in 1902. He taught private international law, international law, and civil law. He retired in 1955 and became a professor emeritus. He subsequently held important positions such as president of Keijo Imperial University (1956-1966), member of the House of Peers (1963-1966), and president of the Japan Academy (1968-1972), and made great efforts to improve the conditions for the development of academic studies and to build the foundations for private international law in Japan, which was unexplored at the time. In particular, he worked to improve positive private international law by drafting the Code (Law No. 10 of 1898) as an assistant to the drafting committee for the Code Investigation Committee under Hozumi Nobushige, and writing the "Reasons for the Enactment of the Code." 国際私法学者。 1895年東京帝国大学法科大学卒業。同大学院で国際私法専攻。 1897年から 1901年にかけてドイツ，フランス，イギリス，アメリカに留学。 1900年助教授，01年教授，02年法学博士。国際私法，国際法，民法講座担当。 30年定年退官，名誉教授。その後，京城帝国大学総長 (31～36) ，貴族院議員 (43～46) ，日本学士院長 (48～62) などの要職を歴任し，学問発展の条件整備に尽力し，また未開拓であった当時の日本の国際私法学の基礎を築いた。特に，穂積陳重のもとで法典調査会起草委員補助として法例 (明治 31年法律 10号) の起草にあたるとともに「法例制定理由書」を執筆するなど実定国際私法の整備に努めた。主著『国際私法』 (1932) 。
