An ancient city in the Bas-Rhin department in the Alsace region in eastern France. Population 15,749 (1982). Located on the left bank of the River Ill, a tributary of the Rhine, the old town is home to a number of historic buildings, including the watchtower clock tower (14th century), a vestige of the city walls, the Romanesque Sainte-Foy Church (12th century), the Gothic Saint-Georges Church (13th and 14th centuries), and the Humanist Library, all of which, together with the old houses, give a sense of the city's deep history.
