Born February 24, 1885 in Fredericksburg, Texas.
[Died] February 20, 1966. American naval officer near San Francisco. Graduated from the Naval Academy in 1905. During World War I, he was Chief of Staff of the Atlantic Submarine Fleet. In 1939, he was Director of the Bureau of Navigation of the Navy Ministry, and in December 1941, immediately after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Pacific Fleet, becoming the highest commander in the Pacific except for the southwestern Pacific, which was under D. MacArthur's command. In June 1942, he led the Navy to victory in the Battle of Midway, and thereafter played an active role in important operations until the end of World War II, including the Battle of the Solomon Islands, the Battle of the Gilbert Islands, the Battle of the Marianas, and the invasion of the Philippines. In December 1944, he was promoted to the highest rank, newly established in the U.S. Navy, of Fleet Admiral. In September 1945, he participated in the signing ceremony for the Japanese surrender aboard the battleship Missouri. He served as Chief of Naval Operations from December 1945 to December 1947.
