A Spanish novel written in the form of a play. Its official title is The Tragicomedy of Calisto and Melibea. The oldest surviving version (1499) has 16 acts, while the version after 1502 has 21 acts. All but the first act are thought to have been written by Fernando de Rojas (c. 1465-1541), a Jewish convert. The story is about a young nobleman, Calisto, who falls in love with a beautiful girl named Melibea, and, at the urging of his servant, asks an old woman, Celestina, to mediate their love, leading to a tragic end for all involved. Although the play is written as a moral admonition, it beautifully depicts the passion and emotions of the nobility, the vulgarity and shamelessness of the lower classes, and more, using appropriate language for each, making it the source of the picaresque genre that was established in the mid-16th century.
