Tachikue Gorge

Japanese: 立久恵峡 - たちくえきょう
Tachikue Gorge

The canyon of the Kobe River in Izumo City, western Shimane Prefecture. It is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty and natural monument, and a prefectural natural park. It was formed by selective erosion of agglomerative andesite, and the cliffs, 100 to 200 meters high, stretch for about 2 kilometers. On the left bank, there is a series of strange rocks called Eboshi Rock, Candle Rock, Saru Rock, Byobu Rock, and Tengu Rock. The Meiji era writer Omachi Keigetsu called it the Yabakei of Sanin. In the center of the canyon is Reikoji Temple, which enshrines Tachikue Yakushi. There is a promenade along the canyon, and nearby there is a youth hostel, an inn, Wakaayu no Sato, which has camping facilities and a multi-purpose plaza, and Tachikuekyo Onsen. There is a bus service from Izumoshi Station on the JR Sanin Main Line.
