In early modern times, this was the main road used by the Tokugawa Shogun when he made pilgrimages to Nikko. It leaves Edo Nihonbashi, separates from the Nakasendo at Hongo Oiwake, crosses the Arakawa River at Iwabuchi (Kita Ward, Tokyo), passes through the post towns of Kawaguchi (Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture), Hatogaya (Kawaguchi City), Daimon (Midori Ward, Saitama City), and Iwatsuki (Iwatsuki Ward, Saitama City), and joins the Nikko road at Satte (Satte City). Each post town accommodated 25 people and 25 horses. Iwatsuki Castle was used as the Shogun's lodging, so it is thought that this road was especially developed. It was a road under the jurisdiction of the road magistrate.
