Gyokusendo Cave

Located in Tamagusuku, Nanjo City, Okinawa Prefecture, this is one of Japan's leading limestone caves. It is a limestone cave formed by the dissolution of Ryukyu limestone, which is unique to the main island of Okinawa, and is 5 kilometers long, with the tourist cave being 890 meters long. It was formed as one of the underground rivers of the Yuhi River, and there are countless caves in the area. Some parts have been known since ancient times as a site for exposure to the elements and as a shelter during World War II, but in 1967 (Showa 42), the entire cave was discovered by the Academic Exploration Club of Ehime University, and opened as the tourist cave "Gyokusendo Kingdom Village" in 1972 (it was renamed "Okinawa World - Cultural Kingdom Gyokusendo" in 2002).

沖縄県南城市(なんじょうし)玉城(たまぐすく)にある日本有数の鍾乳洞(しょうにゅうどう)。沖縄本島に特有な琉球(りゅうきゅう)石灰岩の溶食した鍾乳洞で、全長5キロメートルであるが、観光洞の長さは890メートル。雄樋川(ゆうひがわ)の地下河川の一つとして形成され、この一帯には無数の洞穴がある。古来から風葬地や第二次世界大戦中の避難壕(ごう)として一部は知られていたが、1967年（昭和42）愛媛大学学術探検部によって全容が発見され、1972年に観光洞「玉泉洞王国村」としてオープンした（2002年「おきなわワールド―文化王国・玉泉洞」に改称）。
