…This new style of garden is generally called landscape garden, but just as Italian and French gardens made good use of the characteristics of their respective topographies, it was based on the idyllic landscape of the rolling hills of England. The pioneers of the landscape garden style were the Earl of Shaftesbury, Addison, and Pope, who wrote articles attacking French formal gardens, but the Temple mansion in Stowe (Buckinghamshire) was one of the earliest gardens. It was first designed by Charles Bridgeman (?-1738), who introduced a kind of moat, a haha, at the boundary between the garden and the outside world, allowing the view to blend unobstructed into the surrounding nature. …
