Romanian historian and politician. Born in Moldova, he studied in France and Prussia, and was supervised by Ranke at the University of Berlin. After returning to the country, he devoted himself to the study of Romanian history, the publication of historical materials, and the establishment of new courses in history, and is known as the father of modern Romanian historiography. In politics, he assisted Cuza in promoting the unification movement, and from 1863 to 1865 he became Prime Minister of the Principality of Romania, and was the architect of the Land Reform Law (1864) that abolished serfdom. He continued to serve as a minister after that, but was isolated from the mainstream of politics.

ルーマニアの歴史学者，政治家。モルドバの出身で，フランスとプロイセンに留学，ベルリン大学でランケの指導をうけ，帰国後はルーマニア史の研究，史料刊行，歴史学講座の新設に尽力して，ルーマニア近代歴史学の父とよばれる。政治ではクザを助けて統一運動を推進し，1863‐65年にはルーマニア公国の首相となり，農奴制を廃止した農地改革法(1864)の立案者。その後も大臣を歴任したが，政界の主流からは孤立していた。
