1817‐91 Romanian historian and politician. Born in Moldova, he studied in France and Prussia, and was supervised by Ranke at the University of Berlin. After returning to the country, he devoted himself to the study of Romanian history, the publication of historical materials, and the establishment of new courses in history, and is known as the father of modern Romanian historiography. In politics, he assisted Cuza in promoting the unification movement, and from 1863 to 1865 he became Prime Minister of the Principality of Romania, and was the architect of the Land Reform Law (1864) that abolished serfdom.
